SMA in simple words

SMA_PAGES_INHERITANCE_OF_SMA_GRAPHICMy earlier post in super simple terms: we all have 2 smn1 genes, one from our mum, one from our dad. In 39 out of 40 people that’s 2 good genes. In 1 in 40 people that’s 1 good and 1 “bad”, these people are called carriers. When we have children we pass one of our pair of genes to our children. If 2 people with 1 good and 1 bad come together the possible combinations are: 2 good = unaffected, 1 good 1 bad = carrier, 1 bad 1 good = carrier, 2 bad = SMA.
